99 trouble codes

I got a friend that just bought a 99 4.0 5speed and she wants to know how to get the trouble codes. On my 97 you just key on key off a few times and it shows them.... but it dont work on her 99. Anybody know if you can get the codes on a 99 without a scanner? any help would be appriciated

if you have a screen below the heater controls and such with 2 buttons on it, you can hold down both buttons and put the key in, and start the car. that worked on my friends grand cherokee...[addsig]
