Hi all, I was wondering what the procedure is to replacing the stock CD player/radio with a new one. The entire soundsystem thing looks to be one solid unit...so how would i replace it with a new cd player? Any help regarding this would be appreciated. Maybe it somehow slips out of the unit it is attached to? I'm clueless here.

Thanks!

I'm also looking to buy a used but excellent working condition cd player for under $100

J-n-A, Replac]ing the stock cd player is easy in the TJ. I did it a couple times in mine. I had a 00 but I think they are the same as the 99....correct me if I am wrong.... This is how you do it.

1. Pull up the top piece covering the vents. (use a screw driver carefully) This is only held on with clips. Dont pry too hard it will break.

2. unscrew the top 2 screws holding the plastic face of the console on and then pry off the console. It is held on with more clips. You may have to work a couple angles.

3. Unbolt the CD player from the frame and also the supporting brackets on top of the console next to the vents. the supporting bracket is attached to the rear of the cd player.

4. the CD player should then slip out.

The stock CD player is a double din unit. You can buy adapter kits for a single din CD player but they end up looking goofy. You might spend closer to $200 on an after market double din. But it will definitely look better. Let me know if you have any trouble.[addsig]

I am working on fabbing up a better looking adapter plate.. I am right now getting the adapter plate to match the exterior color of the Jeep (Yellow) and I am going to make a better one molded out of fiberglass :-O [addsig]

Judge, perfect, but you forgot to mention the screw behind the ash tray, and yes 97-2002 wrangler all shared the same center dash, they changed in 2003 for the newer style radio that comes in GC's and Liberty's and has a single white plug opposed to the black and gray two plug harness
*Caution*
You must use the the ground on the back of the radio(either braided steel or black wire with a female spade terminal), If you purchased a wiring harness from say best buy or circut city, the wire that looks like a ground is not, it is actually a mute option for factory installed cell phones.[addsig]
