hi there im a new guy to this board. i resently bought a 97 tj knowing the transmission needs replaced. the junkyard i was dealing with sold the only manual transmission they had. my questions is are the ax-15 transmissions the same or do i need one from a tj. i know where i can get a transmission from a 93 yj as well as a 91 xj. just need some help. thank you

You don't want the XJ transmission, the transfer case is clocked differently.

You don't want the '93 YJ either, you want a '95+ AX15 from a Wrangler in order to get the same output shaft as your current transmission, allowing your transfer case to bolt up the same.

You can also try www.car-part.com to search junkyards nationwide, by region or state, or by major city.

Other than what Bounty has covered, the 2 manual trans. that your looking for is the AX-15 or AX-5. On the Automatic, it's 30/32RH trans. These were the options for the 97 model for the drivetrain.

He wouldn't look for the AX5 unless he has the 4cyl engine. Sounds like he may have the 4.0L since he's looking for an AX15.

Dodge Dakotas were also available with the AX15 but I'm not sure of any differences, ie. transfer case clocking, output shaft, etc.

I looked up the Part number on an AX-15 for a 99 Dakota and the Part number for the AX-15 on the 97 TJ. neither one of them crossed over if that means anything. I did get a message to call Vintage Parts @ 1-877-846-8243 for the 97 TJ AX-15 transmission which is no longer available from Mopar. I hope this helps.

Ok yes i have a 4.0. doing an nv3550 swap is out of the question. I only have a budget of 400 for a transmission .I found a rebuild kit from east coast gear supply. So i think i am going to give rebuilding it a shot. thanks guys. oh sorry about my spelling there in my first post it was late and i was tired.
