i have a 1995 grand cherokee. its the 5.2L automatic. the transmission slips and i was wondering about an up grade or should i just have it rebuilt? also, i heard you can up grade the transfer case with an np231. i know i might have to change the shaft but do i have to find a certain year? what about axles? and does anyone have a hook up with a place to get a cheap(but good) lift kit?

If you have a 42RE, you can upgrade it to a 44RE found on a the same year make and model up to 1998. 46RE was introduced in the 98 models also paired with the NV242 or the NV249. However, i don't know everything involved in the swap. I hope this helps a bit.

thanks. i think i have the np 242 transfer case. im not real worried about the transmission but would like to have 2wd as well as 4wd. like i said, i was told the np231 would help me with that but not sure if i have to have a certain year.

i went a head and bought a np231 transfer case out of a 97 cherokee. now my question is, do i have to add or do anything else besides maybe the input shaft?? otherwise, will it bolt right in?
if anyone can add input, id appreciate it...

You can get the imput from Novak, I swapped a 242 into my old 93ZJ (had a 249 which is prob what you have since it is AWD and the 242 has a 2wd mode) and I had to adjust the shifter linkage a but but other than that it bolted in and I used the same drive shafts. Good luck those top bolts are a PITA.

Keep the 231. IMO it is a stronger box. The 242 has 2hi, 4hi part time, 4hi full time and 4lo. The 231 has those but not 4hi full time. There is a lot more aftermarket support for the 231 as well.

so the 231 turns out to really be the 231J. hey steelheadz, are you referring to the transmission? also, i guess i have a 249 transfer case.
if anyone has any pointers on what to watch/difficulties during transfer case swap, id like any tips....
