Hey guy's having issues with charging system, took alternator in two places to have checked and all is good... battery is only month old, heard about voltage being regulated by on board computer -- well that just great. any way, some one here have any ideas what might be done, taking to dealer is not what I have in mind, way too much cost...

so can one get a used from a pull yard? or is there a way to just by-pass the comp and add a external( like the old days) voltage regulator \

also code I receive is 41-- an open or shorted condition in the generator field control circuit---what ever that means-

help here would be great, thx and Happy New year

OBD-I

Im not sure of the wiring color of the generator field control circuit, it's usually dark green. If there's a short to ground, short to voltage or open short on this circuit, the PCM will not be able to regulate or command the generator to charge the battery. If i was you, i would trace this wire from the generator to the PCM for a short. This will fix that dtc 41 and also the charging issue. Welcome to Jeepz and Happy new year.

Hmm, thanks for the idea, but I guess you must know that that generator is actually an alternator... so you say green wire, hmm must check that if I can find, lol

you can see that I know not much...

Update, check this out, started car again...battery still at 12 V going down, well I had a 2 foot rod and decided to use it with a little tap with a hammer on the alternator and a new sound like a load started, went inside car and yep you guessed it, was charging again at 14V - so looks like that one that tested fine is going...

make any sense? with that code 41 -well hope that's all it is, new one tomorrrow(alternator).
