I was invited to a restuarant which the only way to get there is with a some kind of 4X4 vehicle. My problem is I never used the 4x4 feature in my 82 cj7. I started playing around with it and noticed that it is kind of hard to engage. Is this normal? Sometimes it won't engage at all. I would have to put it in reverse for the transfer lock into gear and it would fall into place. Would I have to overhaul the trandfer?

firts off, welcome to Jeepz! lots of good advice and people here... as for the xfer case...my old wagoneer (74) was tough to change.... not being synchronized is (from what i understand) the reason you have to be going reeeeealy slow to engage or disengage... dont think you have a real big problem but i'm no expert (may be completely wrong here!).... im sure others here know more about it...

Are you trying to put it in gear while moving or standing still? I don't know about CJ's but on my TJ it helps if you are rolling about 2-3 mph. If it is still hard to put in gear maybe try some linkage adjustment .

With that transfercase I wouldn't recommend trying to put it in 4wd while moving. Leave it in gear, but put the clutch in, if you have a hard time putting it in 4wd, let out the clutch just slightly to spin up the gears and help them line up. Don't forget to lock the hubs!
