4wd problem

Okay so today I finally finished my posi lock mod (home made) and the 4wd dose not seam to work. When I had the jeep on jack stands and pulled the cable to engage it all four wheels turned, but when I took the jeep out to the field by my house it only seamed to work for a very short time. I then found out the 4wd stopped working after it got stuck and the front wheels had no power to them just the spinning rear tire. Any ideas on what it could be?? Thanks for any help

This is what I did to the vacuum actuator . Do I need to do something on the transfer case side?

You did shift the tcase into 4x4 then pull the lever?? thats the only thing I can think of. maybe others will know more.

The only things you need to do to the transfer case is plug the vacuum lines and put it in four wheel drive when you want it. Are you sure that the actuator is engaging all the way? I had a problem with mine when i first installed it and had to adjust the cable so it would pull further.

The shift lever controls the transfer case, that's it. Otherwise the disconnect on the front axle is likely moving allowing the axleshafts to unlock.

It's a lot easier to install the disconnect upside down, it holds the shift collar in the locked position. Then you can forget about worrying if it is engaged or not.

Thanks for the reply guys. I thought that was all that I needed to do with the transfer case just wasn't 100% sure. I'm going to take a look at the shifter fork today.

I don't want to flip it upside down unless I have to, but that's always an option. Will I get any vibrations out of the front end if I do end up flipping it and permanently locking the actuator?

All depends on how well your front driveshaft is balanced. Many will say the YJ front driveshaft isn't balanced from the factory, but I'm not a believer as the YJ was built to run highway speeds when in 4hi.

As long as your not running a locker in the front, It won't make much diference if you run it locked all the time.

Great info!.... Took it apart yesterday and found out that the cable itself it binding with the sleeve that covers it. If I can't get it to free up and work smoothly I'm going to flip the fork and see how that works out.
