4WD Not Engaging

Not Sure Where to Start. Have a Stock 91YJ Renegade. 4X4 Indicator light comes on in 4H and 4L. Power to the front wheels is off and on? We had a big snow and I backed out in 4W and I could tell the front wheel was getting power. Going forward the front wheel was not spinning (looked out the window to make sure LOL) Tried moving shift lever in and of or 4W without success tried 4L and again no luck? I have had this trouble before it seems to engage and be fine and then will fail. Will likely take to a garage but want to try to narrow things down so I don't get taken. I am thinking Linkage, Automatic hubs?, I hope not a bad T-case? Any help would be great

I think your front axel and T-case are somewhat controlled by vacuum it sounds like to me you are loosing vacuum somewhere along the lines and the you loose your four wheel drive. Try looking over your vacuum lines to see if there are any leaks. [addsig]

Does the 4WD light stay on the whole time, or does it flicker? I had the same problem with my Jeep, the vacuum lines came disconnected and it got some water in there. This was not really a problem until it got cold and the water would freeze in there, not letting the arm engage the front axle. I would take it off, only 4 bolts, examine it and make sure that it can move freely and there is nothing inhibiting the movement of the arm. It should move back and forth freely. When you put it back on make sure that you put it back with the arm in the same place as before. Otherwise, it won't work at all.

-if the shift motor looks fine, it probably is. Check to make sure that you have a constant vacuum at the shift motor. Have a friend switch the 4WD on and off and make sure that you have a good constant vacuum from all the lines.

Hope this helps
