4cyl towing capabilities

I have a 91 yj 4cyl,5speed,33x12.5 tires,I was curious about it being capable of pulling a pop up camper.I know that hills would be a challenge for it,anyone have any input on this issue.

If I'm not mistaken the towing capacity of your rig is officially only 1,000 pounds. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a pop-up tent trailer, outfitted with all your camping gear, to fall within that limitation. You've already got 4.10 gears with 33" tires on a 27-spline Dana 35 rear axle. Figure in how the additional mass of taller tires has already reduced your OEM braking effectiveness and I assume a higher center of gravity from some sort of lift (what, about 4") and I'd say you'd be pushing things to the max.

Thanks for the input,I didnt think it was the best thing to be doing. Now lets take this a step further.Has any one have some input on the 6 cyl issue here. With a pop up camper.

My Dad towed a medium size pop-up with his 83 CJ7 with the I6. It did fine but there were a few times on some steep downgrades that it got a little hairy. Back to the 4 banger, have you considered a small trailer with a car top tent mounted on it? Basically same effect as pop-up but your kitchen is outside. The mounted car top tent gets you up off the ground. And this way you can go with a much smaller trailer and load up the bottom with all your gear. I know its not quite the same as a pop-up but it is more of a possibility than trying to drag a pop-up. You can pack lots of gear under that roof top tent and the trailer will be under your tow capacity. Think about it. That's my game plan. But I am going to build mine to my specs. Good luck!

Check this out...tent and trailer only 880 lbs. and you've got a trailer that does a whole lot more than just camp!

I like that trailer but they should have gone with the tent mount on the top, raised the sides about a foot, that way you could load stuff on the bottom and not have to unload everything from the trailer to open the tent. Wonder if you could swap the tent to the top very easily?

With a stated top deck capacity of 950 lbs., it looks like the idea was to allow you to carry 3 or 4 motorcycles, an ATV or two, generator, or other bulky equipment. However, if it's made of steel it can be modified with some skill, ingenuity and the right tools.

If you get a popup with trailer brakes you may be a bit better off.

I plan on getting a popup to pull with my 2005 6cyl, so I'm interested to see how you do.
