i've put my old 2 ton over the max before... the cables didn't snap, the hooks didn't break... the ratchet and spool started to misalign.... the weak link is the mechanical system... it should usually break before the cable lets go... and if the system breaks... it just won't ratchet... nothing harmful.... then of course, there are other thigns that could go wrong...

on the other hand my 4 ton, which was 35 bucks... that has never failed me once[addsig]

Back in my pre-jeep days ,I had a Ford f150 with a 8000 Warn winch and I stayed stuck. I would run up to a mudhole and instead of gettin out and locking the hubs, my co-piloot would say " Hit it man, you got a winch". Now in my CJ I keep a 3.5 ton come-a-long with a 40' chain and 3 20' nylon straps. I avoid gettin stuck cause it takes a while to unpack all this gear. Kind of mind insurance.
