2005 jeep liberty tailgate won't open (back door)

Tailgate Back door won't open ... I hear a clicking noise when pulling the handle but it will not open. Any suggestions. I could really use some help with this.

This doesn't exactly open the door for you but gives an idea of what could go wrong. The rod may have come out of the handle or off the latch.
