2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee has illuminated check engine light

I'd start by "reading the engine code". The check engine light says "hey, there's a problem!" Now, we're gonna ask the Jeep what exactly the problem is:
With the Jeep off, turn the ignition key until the digital odometer displays, then turn it off. Repeat two more times in succession and then back to "On" (On/Off, On/Off, On/Off, On). At the fourth "On" the odometer will be replaced with codes. If no codes are present then "Done" will appear.
Post back here with what the code is that's displayed, and we can point you in the right direction.
