1982 Jeep Cj7

I have a 1982 cj7 with 4.2 6 cyl and I would like to know if I could replace the engine with a 1993 4.0 6 cyl. But I do not know if my intake manifold will work on the 4.0 engine.
Does anyone know if the head and block are the same from 1982 to 1993? Also what all would you have to do to swap the engine to make it carburated, because I do not want to change all the electronics. If not, I would like to know what other options I have?

No they are not the same engine, AMC vs Chrysler, they can be swapped, they are not a bolt up but there are adapters and many articles on how-to. There are articles about how to put a 4.0 head on a 4.2 for more power but requires some mods, not sure on which manifold fits what.

But (always a but) why?? if you aren't going for the FI upgrade. By detuning the 4.0 you aren't any better off, in fact you .2 worse off .

Nothing wrong with the 4.2 - a decent rebuild is reasonably cheap, lots of aftermarket toys, Dizzy's, CAMs, carbs.... so on.
