1978 catalytic converter question for a CJ5

I'm looking at buying a 78 cj5. It does not have a catalytic converter. Can anyone tell me if it should have had a converter when built? I have smog testing here, and I'm afraid it may fail the test. Thanks![addsig]

Not really sure on that but I think all cars after 1974 should have a cat....if it fails the test oh well...you can always have a cat put on there.[addsig]

If you jeep was not manufactured with one then you will be under a grandfather law which is cool however if you jeep was manufactured for canadian use then you have a problem you will have to install a cat there was a person a few months back on here that had a canada jeep and had to install one but rayovac is right it suppost to have one after 1974 or 75 I think 75 was the final year before i became enforced also what state do you live in for you emmision testing CA is not the only state anymore is it?[addsig]

What engine is in the CJ-5? Most all vehicles (light duty)after 1975 were equiped with cats. However, I have seen two CJ's with "non-catalyst" stickers on the dash. It was a '76 and a '77 I believe. These CJ's were equiped with the 232 CID six cylinder. All 258's and 304's in CJ's that I have seen were originally equipped with a converter.[addsig]
