1956 CJ5 Build

Looks real nice man. can't wait to see the finished product..
I have a quick question for you, The nut that held your tcase gear to the trany shaft, I am looking for that nut. I understand it is a 7/8 nut but have been told that it is a machined nut and not a fine thread. Do you know if that is true?

It is indeed a 7/8 in nut. It is machined and impossible to find. I almost stripped it during the removal because it was so tight. I ended up needing a 4 foot cheater pipe to apply enough torque. Good luck with your project!

Progress! Installed a new mechanical fuel pump. Installed both drive shafts (painted with POR-15's Hardnose Orange).

Installed the following new items: Exhaust manifold, ignition coil, starter, and carb. I put a coat of POR-15 on the transmission /transfer case. The fuel pump has become very painful to install. Hopefully I will figure that out tomorrow.

Great work on the restoration and documenting the build! Keep on keeping on!

If you need one made, let me know. I own a machine shop and can make one for you. I just need a busted up one to get dimensions or some type drawing or scotch.

I installed the exhaust today. I am going to weld it together next and put on some POR-20 high heat exhaust paint.

Nice work, I am becoming a fan of your thread

Sent from my iPhone using Jeepz

Ia2003,, I got that nut!!! I couldnt find it like you said, so I went to 4x4 shop and they took one off another trany for me and put it on with a impact. Im back on the road, well sorta (exspired tags) thanks. Your jeeps coming along and looking good.

Thats great! Im glad your jeep is road worthy again. Sadly mine is not quite there. Body work is becoming a major issue. I need to replace both sides from front to back. Nobody makes replacement panels for "old" CJ5s.

I found a site that has panels

Thanks for the research, but it looks like they do not have the correct panels. I need the front and rear quarter panels in one piece. They are widely available for flat fender jeeps but not the early CJ5's. One option is to get the panels for a 75-83 CJ5 and just cut down the extra lengnth in the back. Someone correct me if I am wrong but the later CJ5 body was almost identical to the early CJ5's. They were a little longer and did not have the fuel cut out. Otherwise its cutting sheet metal and bondo. Not my idea of fun or quality work. :(

Wow Ian I been gone few weeks and you got alot done looks great:D

Welcome back! I've been spending every spare second in the garage, much to my wife's annoyance. But the Army is moving us to Hawaii in June and the Willys needs to be fully functional to get on the boat.

New OEM mechanical fuel pump finally installed despite problems initially. The far left bolt is in a very difficult spot. There is no room to maneuver a wrench. Got the fuel line ran to my tank resting temporarily on the frame. Body update: sandblasting complete, body work started. More detailed pictures of the body to come as I get them. Also, my original starter died so I bit the bullet and ordered a new high torque starter from www.kaiserwillys.com.

I got the engine started and got it timed. Everything looks, sounds good. I wish I could upload the video of it running. Looking to install the new radiator in the next few days so I can run the engine for more than a few seconds.

The engine has a nice thick coat of orange POR-15 engine enamel. The distributor could not get a good ground. Simple and embarrassing oversight.

Radiator installed and data plates engraved with my Serial number.
