Welded front will have NO CHANGE to the the steering IF the hubs are OFF My front is welded. I hop out of my jeep turn one or both hubs off, drive to town, and its all good. When Im ready to wheel again turn hubs back on. Its a poor boy selectable locker.

Thanks. Her yj is spring under. I upgraded her to a 3.8 v6 with TH350 and a S-10 231. I have to remake the rear drive shaft anyway, so I was thinking of streching the Wheel base while I was there. I might also put an 8.8 under it also.

I would also check the wiring on the Crack postion senser CPS. If that bad boy is becomes disconneted the engine would die. Start the jeep up got from top to bottom, front to back shaking any wires you see.

Maybe someone else who has a 4.2 could help you. My wife has a 88 yj with 2.5. I know on hers it has a CPS crank position sensor. I also know that they are have be known to fail. Which should turn of the spark.
