After my sarcastic reply on another post, I should say that putting a pin on your tailgate was apretty good idea and would be relatively straight forward. You just have to find the right grounding type switch that you could mount in there and connect it to the ground side of your interior light circuit.

I cut off the rear frame cross member and replaced it with 3 inch square stock for a solid mount for tire carrier and such.

I also cut out the rear body pannel of my 78 CJ5, welded up a frame and drop down tale gate, and bolted it it. So far, all have worked well.
