Yota axles under my 89 YJ!!

OK so I got a doner 85 4runner. I've been talking to some people and playing with this idea. I'll be going to a dana 20 pass side drop so no worries on that issue. What thoughts and concerns do you all have on this?

Don't know much about 'yota axles but I'm guessing they are light duty from what I've seen. Not really an upgrade from what you've got now. If you're going through the trouble and $$, upgrade to something stronger like D44's.

Bounty__Hunter,

its a pretty fair upgrade expecially in the rear. replace the birfields with Longfields and you have axles that equal a 44 in stregenth

What gears to get???

and the TRD rear is locked

Wasn't an electric locker an option on the TRD rear?

He's talking about an '85 Yota so it doesn't really apply. Sell the Yota axles to a Yota wheeler and buy some real beef.

I think a better choice would be to get the wider rear from an IFS Yota and add some spacers to make it match the front D30. The rear is a pretty good upgrade and the 4.11 gears are a good match for a 2.5l YJ D30.

Check this Out!

not to be a COMPLETE @$$ but this is coming fomr the guy running a welded 30 and 35... he doesnt know WTH he is talkin about

I think a yota axle would work for the majority of wheeling conditions, but if your going to the trouble, consider an 8.8, I do believe it would take a lot less fabrication. But the rear yota axle is very strong, especially when compared to a D35.

that 8.8 isnt always as good as its hiped up to be...still got c-clips.... good for a 33 inch tire.

Wow, Do I feel some tension, OK the 8.8 will handle a 35 inch tire with no problem. accually, better than a Dana 44. The D44 has 30 spline axles while the 8.8 has 31 and both have the same axle width. (this makes the 8.8 a little stronger.) and the carrier on the 8.8 is a little larger as well.

If you want the best "BANG FOR THE BUCK" fine a 77 bronco or a late 70's IH scount or travelall and yank the axles out of one of those. both vehicles feature a D44 up front, the Scout shares the same axle out back while the bronce has a 9". I personally am not a big fan of the 9" due to the cost of a high pinion rear (most all factory 9" were a low pinion rear end as far as I know)

77 bronco
man im just an ass tonight but the 9" on broncos were a 'small' bearing design and not really all that strong compared to the ones in trucks and if you have a CJ the drop is wrong on the 44

70's IH scount or travelall and yank the axles out
rear axle is a pretty good choice, but in the front you have to move spring hangers and the drop is wrong for a yj/tj and the knuckles should be cut and turned to gain caster unless you find one of the 2K 1980 scouts that already have 2.5* of caster

(most all factory 9" were a low pinion rear end as far as I know)
there were no high pinion 9s ever made. after market HP 9s uses 8.8" ring/pinion

West, there are kits that are designed to eliminate the c clips on the 8.8. And after all the fabrication it would take to put yota axles in, the 8.8 would still be cheaper. The 8.8 is also available with disc brakes, 4.10 gears and an lsd. I dont know of many D44's that have disc brakes from the factory. But the 8.8's weakness is the fact that the tubes are just pressed into the center section, not welded, and there is not as much after market support for the 8.8 as there is for a d44. I just think for price and ease of installation you cant beat an 8.8

This probably isn't too far of topic, but what vehicles came with the 8.8 rear end? Are there any you should stay away from (some better than others)?

if you choose to go with a 8.8 you will want one from a 95+ exploder

Your Toyota "upgrade" will be marginal at best. The strength isn't going to be that much better.
You mentioned putting a Dana 20 in there too. For the price of a transfer case, adapter for the transfer case and driveshafts to fit the 'yota pinion flanges, you can probably get some Warn alloy shafts all the way around on your D30 and D35.
I'm not downing the Toyota stuff, I just think you could make a more cost effective upgrade.

ADAMS JEEP JAM

i'm with bounty... toyota's light/mid truck axles are medium duty at best... i'd stick with something heavier, and easier to get parts for.. plus... ever try taking a diff cover off?
