Yj with cj5 guts fuel sending unit issue

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and this is my first post. I have a 92 yj with the guts of a 73 cj. My fuel gauge doesn't read past empty. I have an aftermarket fuel gauge and the sending unit wire, ground, and switched 12v are properly connected but gauge doesn't read past empty. Is there anything special I need to do to make the 92 sending unit work with the aftermarket gauge. I feel like I am overlooking something obvious lol any help would be appreciated, thanks.

My memory is a little fuzzy but you can check the sending unit at the tank with a multi-meter. If the sending unit is working properly, check up the line for wiring issues.
