YJ Problems- TPS?

I tried to drive my YJ the other day without any luck. It was missing, bucking and stalling throught 1st and 2nd and eventually it would choke out all together. I have had problems with it acting squirlly before, but never like this. I had to have it towed and I was thinking my clutch or something was shot. The shop told my throttle position sensor was bad. Could that be true? I thought it had something to do with my transmission or clutch since the problem seemed to be major when I was driving it. If so, I am mad for having it towed for something so easy to replace. Has anyone had simular problems and it ended up being the TPS?

The key words was missing and stalling...bucking could have been from a clutch problem...but the missing and stalling....TBS or a CPS (crank case position sensor) either one will effect your timing.
Funny that you didnt get a code, I lost my TBS as well and didnt get a code, but the stealership said it was a fluke that I didnt get one hummmmmm

Actually, your problem sounds very similar to the problem I am having after installing the 4.0L TB... Mine starts fine, and idles at about 1.1K RPM... But once it gets warmed up, the idle goes up to about 2K RPM. If I try to give it gas, it starts will all the simptoms you described (missing and stalling). And even on idle (the correct one!) I get some bucking and excess smoke (as in you can actually see the smoke) from the tailpipe, which I take it as an indication that mixture is not exatly right). I will try to replace the TPS this weekend to see what happens.

By the way, I DID get the Check Engine light today. Tomorow morning I'll read the code before getting a new TPS.

Yeah no code. However it was the problem. It's running fine now but is idling a little funny. I guess I need to adjust the ISA motor??

ISA? You mean the IAC (idle air control) motor? It is not adjustible, but can act funny with carbon buildup in the housing.
