yet another funny noise diagnosis...

okay folks...im sorry to pull another one of these on ya'll but ive searched and i couldnt find nothing that was similar enough to what ive got. its a 92, 6 cylinder, 5sp(guessing ax-15?) np231 tc, dana 30 front, 35 rear. the noise seems to be coming from the front of the vehicle, more from the drivers side. it is a clunk that increases frequency with the speed of the vehicle. did a few quick tests but i think it seems to go away with 4h. got under the jeep and twisted the front driveshaft...got a clunk on both the axle and up in the tc area. i wondering if its something as simple as the cv joint on the driveshaft, or if the tc is starting to go... please if you have suggestion help, its my daily driver and i love going wheeling, cant bear to think of this as driveway jewelry

sounds to me like the u-joints on the front driveshaft - i'd R/R them first and see if that cures it --- any vibration in 4wd that isnt there in 2? the increasing clunking with speed seems a bit weird as a ujoint problem usually only "clunks" on and off throttle... hmmm..... could be a problem with the knuckles (dont know what the tech term is) at each wheel... maybe take the shaft out and try the output at the tc and the input at the pumkin to help narrow down the source of the noise...

Hub assy, if not the ujoints. cant hurt to replace the joints... theyre under $10 each, and relativly easy to do. do all 4 up front. Good saturday project, plus youll learn something.

so you guys seem to think its not my tcase? if its just ujoints ill be really happy...ive been scared that i lost the 231

i wouldnt think you would get a noise like that from the Tcase ... i would pop the front driveshaft off then take it for a drive that would help narrow where its coming from and if its diff related/axle or if it is actually a Tcase prob .... also might try sticking it on a lift and and putting it in 4 high and spining the wheels a little while you listen for the prob

okay today i went out and sprayed liquid wrench all over the cv joint...it seemed to cure the problem for about 20 minutes of driving then it came back. I had my girl drive it as i ran outside and it is not the same speed as the wheel...it seems to be at least twice if not more the speed of tire rotation. correct me if im wrong, but wouldnt that cut out the chance of the hub/ujoiunt right next to the wheel being the cause of the problem??

ps thanks a ton for the input...jeepz effen rules
