Bought a new toy!!!!!

so my buddy is buying an 88 xj 2 swap lifts w/ it....anyways he told me he would sell me the body frame and axles for $200 i would need 2 get new suspension and tires but thats cool cuz i want at least a 4 in lift on it....my questions are what type of transmission does it have its a manual(ax 5-ax15)? is it carb or fuel injection? any opinions on what 2 do w/the suspension? I thought about buying new leaf packs w/ 4 in lift and re use my old lift springs for the front because they fit and then do like an a-a-l and a block and shackle on the stock leaf packs and call it a day. i would buy upgraded control arms and everything so it would work. It also ahs 3.73 gears i think let me know about my questions thanks

Hi,

Answers to your questions:

what type of transmission does it have its a manual(ax 5-ax15)?
Well, unfortionately the 1987 and most 1988 standards use the Peugeot BA-10/5 Standard. I think everyone, including me has said "what a piece of $hit" when referring to our BA-10s , but they actually aren't all THAT bad.... I mean, mine has around 410,000 miles on it and hasn't exploded yet

is it carb or fuel injection?
If it's a 4.0L engine, it is Fuel Injeted. Jeep began using fuel injection on the Inline 6 in the 1987 model cherokees. I'm not sure about the 2.5L engine, but I think the years were about the same as well.

what 2 do w/the suspension? I thought about buying new leaf packs w/ 4 in lift
Good idea. Trust me, you'll probably want to or have to buy completely new Leaf springs . My thought is, if your spending the time and money fixing the suspension, pay the extra money, get completely new leaf springs, and know they'll last. Also, Cherokees have front COIL springs, and only leafs in the rear. You'll need a transfer-case drop, new control arms, and longer track-bar for any lift over 3".

It also ahs 3.73 gears i think
Your guess is as good as mine. It would depend on the axle and possibly the engine. DANA 30 (front) and DANA 35c (rear) axles are standard, DANA 44 (rear) axles came only with SOME models equipped with the towing package.

Now for my opinion on the lift... I think 3" lifts look great and are fine. 4+" lifts don't do much for me on the Cherokees. Think about things like center of gravity and having to buy many more parts to accomadate the larger lifts.

Sounds like a fun project. Good Luck

By The Way,

The best indication that you have a Pugeot BA-10/5 transmission is that there will be a seam in the metal running from front to back of the gear case block, near the bottom of the transmission. This seam is there (along with one near the top), because the BA-10/5 gear box is actually two halfs bolted together.

Also it doesn't look like an AX-15 :P

2.5L had the AX5 transmission, the 6 cyl. had the Peugeot BA10/5 transmission. The AX15 didn't replace the BA10/5 until mid-year '89.

You'll be good up to about 4.5" of lift without lowering the transfer case to reduce vibes. Newer XJ's aren't so lucky. Tallest tire you can fit with 3" lift is about a 30" or 31".

MJ shackles and GM truck lowering shackles work great to lift the rear of an XJ, in addition to full-length add-a-leaves. Check out the XJ guru www.rustysoffroad.com for great products at great prices.
