XJ Makeover

A friend of mine is giving me a 2" budget boost kit from Rocky Road with the stock extensions. Can I or does anybody run this setup with 31x10.5 BFG AT's. I was told I may have to do some minor trimming. My XJ is my wifes everyday driver and we take it out for some moderate fun every once in a while. I don't want to sacrifice road performance and I really don't want 30's. Any pointers?

Do you already have the tires? If not, and it's a 97 or newer XJ then maybe go with 30x9.50x15 instead. It may make more sense than trimming a DD for 31's.

If it's a 96 or earlier you might not need to trim for 31's unless you plan on disconnecting the swaybar.

I have a connection for cheap BFG's. It's an '01, but I really dont want 30's.......they just look kind of wimpy. You don't think I can get get 31's at all under her with slight modification? Twisted.....What did you have on your XJ? I like that setup.

If you go with 31's, then you will probably see a difference in gogo juice. I have 31x12's on mine with a 3 inch lift and I can definitely see a drop in MPG since it was stock. Good Luck.

31's isn't possible on a 2 inch lift, the tires will rub a great deal, you can go up to a 3 inch but still rub slightly when going off road, but you can trim the inside and the fender flares you can take off and trim an inch and a half up to 2 inches and still put the fender flare back on.

Yeah, you could. It would rub offroad (maybe even on-road), and tear flares off with the swaybar disco'd. It would take a good bit of trimming, and prolly some TJ flares or Bushwhackers or some other cut-out type flare.

I had a hair over 4" and 31's, but they were narrow (9.50 width). The 31's came real close to rubbing, but didn't.

I later got 32x10.50's and they rubbed a little offroad, but not bad.

I have seen the older XJ's (96 and earlier) run 31's on a 2" BB, and they were tight. The 97-01 models had even smaller wheelwells. Just be aware it may take more than a little trimming and/or flares.

This is how close 31x9.50's came with the swaybar disconnected and a 4+ inch lift:
