XJ lift

my cousin is thinking about getting a 2" budget lift on his xj. (the rubicon express one). couple questions for you guys....with only a 2" lift, there is no need to tweak anything else right? transfer case etc....he has a standard. and the other question is what size rubber could he fit in there? i'm guessing 30's? 31's at most? thanks for your help guys!

with a 2" lift you can fit 30's on an XJ... 31's will rub.. other than that you should be fine.

He'll have to lower the transfer case .5" if it's a '97+ XJ. Pre '97 is fine, no problems with that amount of lift.

The front axle may be slightly off-center, he can redrill the lower track bar mount if it's enough to bother with.

he might fit 31's with 2" of lift... i fit 30's on my stock (and badly worn) suspension with only very minimul rubbing during a sharp turn.

Just as the transfer case drop is dependant upon what year XJ he has, so is the tire size. The front wheel wells got a little smaller in 97, so 97 and later XJ's with 2" of lift are limited to a 30" tire (without rubbing). 96 and earlier should be able to squeeze 31's, but expect rubbing if offroad and don't disconnect the swaybar!

I would personally stick to 30" tires on 2" lift with any year XJ.

thanks for your help guys. he's got a 94 2 door, so i'm gathering the main consensus is 30's....but if he wasnt at full flex, 31's might fit?

its not so much the flex but turned that does it..... and why lift if you're not going to push the limits?

Yeah, 31's probably won't rub the fenders on the '94 unless under full flex or offroad with the swaybar is disconnected.

As greywolf said, they'll rub at full lock (wheels turned all the way to one side or the other). I had this problem with 32's on my YJ with stock wheels so I adjusted the wheel stops slightly. It narrowed my turning radius slightly, but nothing to complain of. He could do the same thing on his Cherokee if he wants to put 31's on stock wheels. This could also be corrected by using an aftermarket wheel that sticks out a little farther (don't ask me what backspacing, I don't know).
