xfer 99 wj

Ok, dropped the X-fer case out of the jeep to change the chain now I can't get the thing apart, the rear output shaft still has the case on it and I don't have a puller long enough to get it off, any else redone their x-fer case? I'm going to hit napa in the afternoon tomarrow to see if I can get the puller. Just thought would put a thread out, to get rid of some of this animosity. but Heck what is working on ur jeep if you don't hit a road block or 2... or a few busted knuckles?

Have you removed the splitring from the shaft outside the rear output housing? Once off, you should be able to pry the rear housing off.

had to order a larger gear puller, saw I could beat it off with a screw driver and hammer, but this way I have a new tool  just had to talk the MRS. into it which was easy, was like. umm jeep is stuck in the garage till I get the tool to pull it apart and put the chain on  so should have it pulled apart tomarrow, and back togeather if all goes well that night.

I've worked on dozens of transfer cases and never needed a puller of any sort.

If you've got a harmonic balancer on the end of the rear output, three bolts (I believe they are 10mm to 12mm) into the balancer will force it right off.

Well my x-fer is SH*T, opened it up and have broken teeth on the main shaft assembly, havn't dug into it deeper, am depressed, am without my Jeep till I get the money to another nv242. guess I'm not going to make it to classes on the 5th now, oh well there is always next semester.

If it's already apart, just replace the broken gear! The only thing you need is a pair of duck bill snap ring pliers from Sears. remove the snap ring and slide the gear off the shaft.

Look up some SYE directions on line, it shows how to remove the gears because you need to take the gears off the old shaft and put them on the new one.

A new gear will be cheap compared to even a used transfer case, and how do you know that one won't need the same thing?

dana 300 in a wj, would be an interesting fit, Figure I would just get 30 buck goto U-pullit and get another transfer nv242. was looking at the 231 but figured the 242 was just fine, thinking of putting some lower gears in but don't know. Really don't have the money like I did a year ago to put into it :(

Well got the used 242 from the junk yard got it home and what do you know it has the same broken teeth at the same place, I think it comes from the factory that way when they install the Lock ring. Well anyways was looking at all the connections for hooking up the x-fer and wouldn't you know it, I have to get the 242 WJ not just a 242 due to the fact that it uses holes that are not on the one from the yard, and the one from the yard has holes not used by the wj. Though I did get some parts out of it. now going to go back this next week and try my luck at the other yard, will get credit for the one I'm not using so it's all good. I did end up with a cool steering wheel horn cap though, going to hang on wall, says Jeep in silver and has a cool ring around it with fake silver allen heads.

well got my transfer put back together and working. here is the pic of the donor. what was funny is the add that came up after uploading the image.

That's because you got a NV242 case from an XJ with an AW4 trans. Your WJ has a 42RE trans. The hard parts are the same on both cases, but the bolt flanges are different. I used to see that kind of stuff daily when I worked in auto salvage.

actually the bolt flanges , studs and everything were in the right spots, pretty much the exact same transfers, it was the sensors that moved, IE the WJ version don't have a spedo on the transfer and has the shift indicator just opposite of the dent pin, where the xj transfer had the spedo, and no shift sensor their. All in all it work I even used the rear half of the xj case cause the wj case was cracked also and didn't realize it till I was about to bolt it up, the only diff for the 2 halves was that the wj used allen plug and the xj used a regular bolt style plug & washer.
