Wrecked Grand Cherokee's

The junk yards in brooklyn are filled with grand cherokee's. Is there anything worth gettin from them. Motor? axles? something. What engine is in there. Is it good for a yj or cj swap.

Well you dont want the rear axle. And not the t case. The engine is usually a V-8, but probably not worth swapping into your jeep, because a 350 will be cheaper, and easier, or so I have been told.

hey joe where in brooklyn are you talking about? im still looking for a good low milage motor, what do u think the price would be for a 98 4.0 out of a grand cherokee would be? im over in staten island so the trip to get the motor wouldnt be bad at all. thanks

Actually, most are 4.0's... there are quite a few V8's out there though.. the 4.0 is the same as the TJ....

If it's the ZJ Grand Cherokee, many came with the D35 rear axle with disc brakes. Be a good mod to put disc brakes on your YJ D35.

Another one is the temp/compass unit in the overhead console that also does Distance til Empty and mileage. Be sweet to put one in a SWB. Somebody here did, I think it was InspectorGadget.

how are the transmissions in the grand cherokees? im still looking for a way to put an over drive unit into my TJ i dotn want to be revving so many rpms on the highway. is there a seperate comp for the trans in the grand cherokee? thanks for lookinf for a price for me its greatly appriciated they want around 1000 bucks for a 4.0 engine here in staten island and i told them what they could do with there motor......

oh thanks but im trying to stay with an automatic, i do lots of high way driving and lots fo NYC traffic, a manual would be too much for me to deal with while im cussin and trying to get infront of the guy in front of me but thanks

That link IS for installing an auto. The AW4 is commonly found in the XJ and has an overdrive 4th gear. I imagine it's also in many ZJ's behind the 4.0L engine.

The AW4 is computer controlled so you'll need to make the transmission computer work with your existing computer. It's a little longer than the TJ autos so your driveshaft lengths may need changed. The transfer case mounting ring has to be redrilled to properly clock the TJ transfer case on the AW4. The transfer case input needs replaced or machined down to match what's needed for the AW4.

It's a lot of work but it's a good mod to get that OD. One member in our club did it when his TJ auto transmission went out, he seems to be really happy with it. Send a PM to monsterrd on this forum for more info, it's a good friend and neighbor of his.

hahaha sorry guys i read that wrong or understood that wrong i see what your saying now ill look into that article now thats what im looking for thanks alot guys

hey guys i was thinking about it and since i am also swapin gthe engine harness wouldnt it be easier if i swaped in an XJ harness thats got all the hook ups for the auto trans? any thoughts on that? the only thing that i figured that might be different was maybe the length of wireing and positions of the connectors, other than that i cant think of any differences. thanks in advance

You'd need the jeep computer too since the XJ uses the seperate transmission 'puter. That XJ harness may be a tough fit.

That was the great inspector, but I believe he said his was out of a Grand Caravan!

There are a lot of parts that could be slavaged with a little thought and creativity. A nice set of leather seats for short cash is always great!! GC have the larger 14" rotors up front where most YJ's, and TJ's only have 12" units. (pre 98 GC) grab some coils for a custom suspension :-)
The rear end is probably junk, but the gears might be worth something. Some GC came with I think 4.11:1 or 4.10:1 or what ever.
