won't stay in 4 low

Just bought a 2000 TJ from a guy who lived in the city and never used 4wd. I put it in 4 low and everything worked fine except it will not stay in gear. As long as I hold the shifter back it's fine. Does the linkage need to be adjusted or could it be something else? Also how do I find out what axles I have. New to jeeps. Any help would be great.

on my '05 you have to pull the lever all the way up and then move it towards the driver's side to lock it in. not trying to be smart, but thats what i would try. good luck, john

Welcome to the Z. Doesn't sound like a linkage problem, nothing should have changed there.

I bet its internal, and its possible changing fluid in the transfer case will help. Poor or low fluid causes shifting problems.

Rebuilding the TC is easy, but a used one is a good option depending on skills.

Does the jeep have a body lift?

The t-case shifter linkage IS adjustable. If you can hold it in low, it sounds like an adjustment will fix it.

Your 2000 came with the dana 30 axle in front and either a D35 or D44 in back.

You can call the service dept at any jeep dealer with your VIN# and they can tell you which rear axle came with the jeep, or post a pic of the pumpkin and we can tell you.

If it's got a transfer case lowering bracket, I had the same problem after installing my 4" lift. Underneath the body is a linkage which connects the lever to the transfer case. If it's been lifted it should have a flat piece of 1/8 inch metal about the size of a half deck of cards and oriented vertically, which allows the linkage to be moved farther away from the body. A linkage rod goes between the transfer case and this bracket and takes a 90 degree bend near the distal (body) end, then pushes through a rubber bushing. The end that pushes through is tapered and sticks out far enought to rub on the drop bracket, and I had to take a big nasty file to mine and take off 1/8 inch so it would clear. I can try to take a picture underneath my rig if you're desperate. If it's got no lift, then disregard this post:)

X2. Mine did the same thing when it had a body lift on it. Pull the lever back and it would hit the floor of the jeep before it would engage enough to stay in low range.
