Several months ago, my softtop windshield channel was leaking since a few screws came out and the wind/rain would seep underneath. To fix the problem I took the channel off, applied a think line silicone to the bottom and reattached it to the windshield frame.
It worked for several weeks but, since a few of the original screws would not tighten, the wind and pressure worked part of the channel back loose over time and I begin to get the same leakage. When I took it off a week ago, a lot of silicone (and black paint from the channel) stayed attached to the windshield frame. A few questions here:
1. What is the best way to get the dried silicone off my windshield frame without harming the paint? The stuff is being really stubborn and I need to remove it before I can put the windshield channel (and my soft top) back on.
2. What is the best way resecure a windshield channel when the stock screws no longer hold it down? Apparently the holes in the frame somehow got a little larger...maybe from the vibrations when they were loose. I bought thicker screws and am prepared to use them but if there's a better way I'm all ears. I would prefer to avoid using thicker screws if possible since this could theoretically happen again and again and would require thicker screws each time.
3. Do I need to use silicone (or something else) when I reattach it to prevent it from leaking or is screwing it down tightly enough to prevent the water seepage when driving in the rain?
Help! Thanks!
