Winches

Curious if the Warn Winches are worth the increase in cost.

I am looking for a 9000lb winch.
Ramsey Patriot 9000 is roughly half that of the Warn 9500
The Warn-Tabor is also a good bit cheaper.
Mile Marker?
Superwinch?

Thoughts?

Warn is worth the money. Compare the Warn M8000 if you are trying to save $$$. It will out perform those foriegn made 9K winches anyhow.

I can't think you'd need bigger than 8K for your Jeep, but if you did, just bring a snatch block along, it nearly doubles the power of a winch ;)

Warn is more expensive just because it's faster. The superwinch and milemarker will work fine just wont be as speedy.

You have to compare apples to apples when comparing winches, and I don't think Warn is faster when compared to something similar of another make. Sure Warn makes two or three of the fastest winches out there, but that's generally a no-load line speed rating.

Warn is worth the extra $$ in my opinion, it's the only option for hard use. If you use yours infrequently and want it there for piece of mind, then maybe a cheaper winch will work.

Can't go wrong with the Warn. The ones with integrated solenoid packs are the fastest because they are more aerodynamic.
I have no problem with the Ramsey Pro or Patriot series either.

Go for warn dont make the same stupid mistake i did, Bought a Milermarker the 8000 pound one and man do i regret it. The POS freaking toasted itself on its first use. I was winching my jeep up a hill were the tires where spining freely i was not even stuck and suddenly a little white cloud of smoke appeared and the rest is history. A winch has to be reliable, if your gonna spend money on one get a warn those things never fail, and that is nice to have. Iam gonna see if i can fix this thing the cheapo way any suggestions on what to fix?, even though i fix it its still in the back of my head that when i get stuck its a POS pulling me out.

That Tabor looks like some made in China junk to me. I can't believe Warn is selling those on their site. Find out where it is made before you waste your money.
The bolt pattern was listed at the bottom.
BTW...I can't see having that nice TJ in your avatar and a nice Road Armor bumper sporting an el cheapo winch. Save up and get the good stuff or E-bay a used Warn.

Even old used Warns are better than any import winch. Import winches are a gamble, I've seen 'em last and, like mentioned, they've sometimes burned up the first time out. My Warn 8274 was made in '76 and still works great, with a 76ft./min. no-load line speed. Helps with recovery time.

Twisted had a good point, the Warn m8000's are resonable and if need be I can always use a snatch block. I think that is the direction I will go. Thanks all.

A friend of mine was just about to buy a POS- Chicago Electric made in Chiney by a bunch of 10 year olds winch at Harbor Freight for $350. For this application he only needed a 3500 rating. I found him a Warn 3700, new at a Pick-up accessory place for the exact same price. So In that case Warn was the same price.

The Tabor is a Warn winch, all Warn components, just a shorter drum, less cable, and a few other economical features. I think those are correct, my buddy owns a 4x4 shop and was showing me the differences, I may be wrong in my memory so don't shoot me if I am, but I believe he said they're almost the same. Same motor and important stuff that has to last.

The "limited" is refering to what exactly is covered by the warranty...not the length of time.

I think they suck actually. They just suck less than everybody elses.
Truthfully, even you guys with Warns, think about all the times you have had to pull on a cable with all your might, winched the hook up in the fairlead, caught a splinter, had to twist the engage lever 14 times while hitting the In button, stalled the winch, had smoke coming off your battery terminals, melted a solenoid...
Not me, per se, I'm just observing what happens to the rest of y'all. I don't get stuck.

I think that you have to consider how you are going to use the winch.

I started with a Tabor 9K. It is a good winch, but don't expect it to last forever. It should be considered a limited use winch. When I got stuck in a bog on Birdseye Gulch near Leadville in Colorado, 2 of us had winches. My Tabor pulled my Jeep right out. The Mile Marker on the other vehicle stopped 1/2 way through the pull and we had to wait until it was cool enough to run again.

Winches are like everything else. They will fail at the worse of times. I remember slipping off a narrow trail. Not worried, I set up the Tabor. It ran for 15 seconds and gave up the ghost. It cost me a night in the woods.

I have a Warn XD9000 now. I also have a Amsteel rope. Very satisfied now. The Warn is also for the 'more' than casual user.

One other thing - Practice with it before you need it! Also buy an "Tread Lightly" kit with it. They generally contain a snatch block, a chain, a tree strap, a clevis and snatch strap. It can assist in almost any situation and save the trail...

Yes they are. They won't cover stupidity like wiring it backwards though.
