Winch ?

Im looking at a Mile Marker E9000 winch at e-winches.com with mounting plate for my YJ for $600.

In the discription it states this
Performance Specifications: 9,000 lbs. (single line)

Rated Line Pull

1st Layer 2nd Layer 3rd Layer 4th Layer

9,000 lbs. 7,300 lbs. 6,200 lbs. 5,400 lbs.

No load Line Speed
14 FPM. 20 FPM. 26 FPM. 32 FPM.

What does it mean 1st layer 2nd layer ect.

the layers refer to how many layers of cable are on the drum. the first layer is the layer directly on the drum. second layer is the next one up, so on and so forth. the reason they decrease is because it takes me leverage to turn the drum as it gets bigger. every winch has these ratings, and they are all very close usually

Those figures refer to the wraps (layers) of cable on the spool. The first layer (cable fully or nearly fully extended) would be equivalent to 1st gear, 4WL - you can climb a tree (9000# pull) but you're going to be doing it VERY slow. As the cable wraps up on the spool, your pulling capability decreases while your line speed increases (something like shifting gears - climbing ability decreases while you spead increases).

That's kinda it in a nutshell........someone else may be able to explain it better.

Let me just say you will not be disappointed here. That is a great winch.
If you check out my home page, on page five you will see a blue 97 TJ with that very same winch. Tim has had that on for over a year now and has chased me through the wilds of Moab without lockers till last thanksgiving when I installed his. That winch has pulled his 97 through the toughest trails that Moab has to offer and still begs for more.

Thanks everyone. going to do some more pricing but I think This is going to be the one.

I just put the se12000 on my Jeep... worked out well.

I have the E9000. I replaced the cable after a year but I was hard on it and abused it, etc. This is a great winch, I used it a heck of a lot so far!

im actually looking at the harbor freight winch. Around $300. People are gettin pretty good results with it.

I've got something similar (a "Duke" - a.k.a. "Chinese" - probably the same as the Harbor Freight). They're alright for occasional winching - slow line speed - but if you're gonna be doing a LOT of winching, might wanna spend some more money. Next time, I will.....but my little Asian winch is alright for now.

Harbor Frieght has thier 9K winch on sale for $350.

similar to the MM E9000 and all the other chinese made winches, good for intermittent use but buck up for a Warn or Ramsey for repeated hard use. You get what you pay for, and the OEM and aftermarket support for Warn is top-notch.

my friend had a milemarker winch and it ran perfectly fine, he also used it alot. I got a warn and and ramsey and love em both
