WINCH PROBLEMS!

I recently bought a winch used off my brother to help him out when he bought his new YJ a week ago. The guy bought the winch used and said he used it but only twice or so. I took it off my bros jeep last thursday and put it on mine. I had to cut back the wires and crimp on new terminal connectors first, so I cut them back to do so... before I put on the new connectors I had the electrician here at work hold the wires onto the battery terminals (optima by the way). I pulled out some line with the free spool, and tried to wind it back in with the remote. All we heard was clicking and no movement. The wires that the other guy was holding started smoking a little and he thinks it's a short in the motor. I called the guy that we bought it from, he swore that it worked.

Any ideas how I can get this working? I would like to get it fixed before paragon this weekend! Oh it's a WARN XD9000.

Which terminals was it connected too? I am no winch expert but... I have read that a sinch should not be put to the same terminals as the fatroy ones are, also they should be put to the side terminals of the optima for best performance. what possibly could have happened was that the winch was not receiving anough voltage to operate properly. a easy way to test for a short is to get a multi meter and use the continuity option. put one lead to the positive side of the winch, and the other lead to the negative side. if you hear a buzz from teh meter, of the continuity symbol appears (depends on the meter) then you definatly have a short some where in either the motor assembly or in the selenoide. If all is good...
Crimp the new terminals on and attach to the battery as it should be and test it.

where did they start to smoke from ? If he was just holding them there on the ternimals, thats not good enough...
like johnny said, hook it up properly. MAKE SURE you ground the plate that the relays are mounted too....

He was just holding them there... I guess that was dumb to do. When you say "ground the plate that the relays are mounted to" I don't know what you mean, and there are only 2 wires comin off the winch that go to the battery, I don't see a ground at all... unless you are talking about the black wire of the 2.

I can't do any continuity tests on it or anything cause the jeep is at the alignment shop.

First of all, crimp the ends of the cables and mount them on the battery. Someone said that they heard that you are supposed to use the side posts on an Optima. I have heard the opposite so you may need to research that issue some more.
Second, it sounds like you have smoked one of the solenoids. See if it will spool out, then try to spool it back in. If it will go out but not in then you have fried the "retract" solenoid. Dead solenoids will click but not work.
The good news is that when you have tracked down which solenoid is the bad one, they are easily replaced. They are the same solenoid as a Ford Ranger starter takes. They are about $12 at Autozone. No need to contact Warn for an overpriced new one.
My XD 9000i has four solenoids so you may have to study the diagram to determine which one is bad.

Soft top boot

Hook the winch to the top terminals, the side terminals may melt with too much of a draw

I pray I don't have to post a post like this tomorrow or the next day.

I am going to install my winch MME9000 and selenoid too, on an optima redtop and also am hoping to get it on before Paragon this weekend.

I've NO experience, so we'll see.

I had read, top posts for the winch though.

"Pro comp sus lift or what else?"

Hey redrooster, do i have to special order those selenoids? or does autozone usually have them in stock? I took it oof the jeep today and I am going to hook it up to the fork lift battery at work (probably gonna kill that tiny battery) hopefully it is just the selenoid... where can i get a diagram like that? I tried to look at your links for that Bounty but they say "Forbidden"... do those links work for anyone else?

Same solenoid setup as that 8274. It's a common solenoid so most places should stock them.

Well I hooked it up to a battery today and tested the continuity, and that was fine, but when I hit the switch to pull in or out, nothing happend this time... not even the click that I had before. I think I'm going to bring it to a Electric motor repair place. Thanks for the ideas though.

Ya, top mounts, had it back words, you know what, I was looking in a mirror when I was typing so it had it reversed. :)

8) Joop,

Sorry to see your winch is still broken. I got lucky and mine went on and works like a charm! So far, not been on a vehicle yet but we installed it tonight. Girl Jeep just got tougher. Gonna use it this weekend at Paragon hoping. Leaving in 2 hrs! See ya'll there.
