Which gas tank do I have?

Re: Transmition Slipping?

I have a 91 yj 6cyl. I have been smelling gas after fillups. I pulled the tank today and snapped one of the tank straps. Its a plastic tank no marks on it. I see straps on ebay that look like it but there are different ones for the 19gal and 15gal. How do I tell them apart?

RE: Best TJ gas mileage ever!

Actually they were the same tank. They put a long tube inside the filler neck to reduce the capacity to 15 gallons for the base models. Many folks have removed or shortened the tube to get a 20 gallon tank out of their "15" gallon tank.

I really don't know why they would have 2 stock #'s, maybe because they cover earlier or later years too, but all YJ's have the same 20 gal tank.

Is that the same with cj's? :D

All YJ's do not have the same size fuel tank. You should be able to distinguish between the two by how much space is seen between the shackles and the tank. If it apears that there is less than an inch or so between the edge of tank and the shackles you have the twenty gallon tank if there is three or more on each side you have the smaller.

You're both right. '87-'90 YJ's either had a 15gal or 20gal tank, you could tell the difference by comparing the space between the tank skid and the shackle. Even space on both sides is a 15gal, very little space on the driver's side means a 20gal tank.

'91-'95 YJ's all had the same plastic 20gal tank, with the 4bangers being limited to 15gal by an extended fill tube into the tank.

There are no 19gal tanks, I beleive those were on TJ's.

The tank mod from 15gal to 20gal does not apply to CJ's. You can do it to TJ's but it requires lowering the tank and going in through the sending unit opening.

RE: Happy Birthday to my Jeep

Anyone have the link handy to that filler tube removal? I've got some spare time on my hands, a near empty tank, and some warm weather coming in and want to get that done. I can still get 20 gal in my YJ, but that last 5 takes FOREVER!!!! I hate standing at the pump for 10 minutes holding the pump handle so it dribbles in at the amazingly slow rate of .01 gal/sec. My math is better with a 20 gal tank and 20mpg than it is with a 15 gal tank, so I know how far I've driven, and how far I can go before the next tankful.

RE: RTI ramp question?

Hey sparky, this might be a stupid idea, but why don't you just replace the sending unit and use the gas gauge? I don't know your situation nor have I worked on anything newer then a cj. I'm just curious. Rich

Carry a wooden block with you and drive up on it with your left wheel when you pull up to the pump. That'll make it easier to fill.

Two reasons:

1.) It's cheaper to watch the odometer;

2.) The gas guage is still fairly accurate, and I think of it as more of a challenge and a game to watch the odometer!

Well at least what I wrote does apply to your 91. Sorry for the confusion, but hey - now I know my 88 YJ Laredo has a 20 gal tank ;)

Hey Sparky - if that writeup tells you to cut the tube and replace it, just leave it out. You don't need to put it back. I didn't on my '92 and never had an issue.

RE: More Jib Jab for Inauguration Day...

Thanks for the link, YJTino, I've bookmarked it for later reference. It sounds as though this can be done without dropping the tank. I certainly hope so, as I don't fancy dropping the tank. As it stands now, I won't be able to do this for at least another day, due to the incredibly large amount of mud I packed under the Jeep today while celebrating it's birthday, as demonstrated in a few pics here.

RE: water in auto transmission

It can be done without dropping the tank, but it's tough to get the hands in there and remove the hose clamps. Much easier if you have a body lift.

I love having the extra 5gal with my 2.5L, and the fact the gauge reads full for over 100 miles. I've got a 4.0L sending unit but no reason to put it in yet.

Re: RE: Canadian Jeepers

Interestingly enough, a while back when I was having fuel tank, pump/sender issues the shop that I was having work on it eventually had to order a tank from the stealership and even though the 91-95 YJ's have all the same tank (but the 15's have the tube) there are 2 part #'s for the same tank. Pretty funny I thought.
