I have an 83 CJ7 that I am on the final stages of rust removal and I want to swap in a 4.0 and be done with that miserable Carter, not to mention the motor has lots of miles. Im in CA so I need it smog legal, so the carb swaps arte not really an option for me plus I want injection. I can get a 97' 4.0 out of a Grand Cherokee for a pretty good deal. Ive read lots on the 4.0 conversion and it seems pretty straight forward, Im just not sure which 4.0 is good to swap in and why. Would the 97' Grand Cherokee 4.0 be a good candidate? Im pretty sure I have the SR4 transmission. I guess another question is how can I identify the transmission?

Any tips on this conversion?

Thanks!!!!

If you go with the 97 4.0, make sure to get the computer and the wiring harnesses. I have a book at work that will identify your transmission, but it's at work.[addsig]

I´ve put in two late 80´s multi-piont injected 4.0´s. With no real trouble. I got a persistant touble code in the computer because of instrumentation, that didn´t really affect anything. The only other trouble, was I cut some wires in the first swap I did and shortened them, which I later found out was a no, no. On the next I just rolled up the extra wire with cable ties. I left both wiring harnesses in the vehicle just in case I wanted to change back someday. Ended up with a few extra plugs and such. And had to get creative with a couple of sending units. The earlier engines had fewer sensors and such, and a much more reliable (and cheaper) computer. Just an opinion.[addsig]

Thanks, so if I get the computer and wiring harness does that mean I would NOT need the Hesco (or similair) harness. Is the wiring harness from the 97 motor an engine only? or entire harness with gauges etc..?

Would the 97 harness plug into my CJ block on the firewall or I would need to adapt it?

Thanks![addsig]
