when to air down

Okay, folks this may seem like a rather basic off road question. Can some one please tell me when I should air down my tires. (yes I have an compressor) I understand the need and benefit of airing down in soft sand, but what about a rocky trail.? What about washboards???? thanks.......[addsig]

If your lift is so high that your roll bars are draging the roof in the parking grarge or if you are stuck under the drive through at Wendy's air down then pass freely. Please air back up when you are free and back on the open road!
