wheezing stalling HELP?

Hey gang,

My 91 XJ 223k mi which had been running like a top lately has just started acting up. Her symptoms are wheezing and stalling and a real rough idle, I am thinking it is related to the sensors or idle control mod b/c this only happens at low speeds. However the girl has seemed awfully sluggish on acceleration recently too, its as if this problemo has gotten worse. Just to let you know in the last year she's had new injectors, fuel pump, tank, o-rings in the fuel line, and fuel filter, cap rotor plugs wires, plus a complete new cooling system. Now I did take out her thermostat last fall to try and isolate an over heat problem and never put it back in, I have noticed that she ran rougher this winter b/c of the long warm up times and cool temps that the computer read into its firing mix/order however I dont believe what with the weather turning warmer that the thermo could have anything to do w/this current problem. Thanks for your help!

Re: grr-rah

An easy thing to check might be a bad catalytic converter. When mine went bad it ran really rough and even shut off a few times because it was to clogged up with whatever is in the converter. Thats just my thought someone with more experience may have a better idea though.

Hi,

I agree that it could be the Catalytic converter. However, realize that if it is the Cat. converter, the symptoms should get worse at higher engine speeds, as that is when the back pressure in the exhaust system is the greatest. Another culprit if it is randomly stalling could be the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS).

P.S. You really should have a thermostat installed. Removing the thermostat can cause problems, and your engine will likely waste more gas if there is no thermostat installed...

Yeah I am resigned to put in a new thermo, probably this week. I forgot to mention complete new exhaust last year also. I think the crank position sensor is acting up, but as far as the chugging in gear, this model is equiped w/a transmission switch for power economy mode, any way I must have hit it while driving. Simple solutions are the best. I will get on the thermo/ Thanks NICK!
