Whats the deal lately? I've been on this board for several years and these last few weeks have been one spammer after another.
Can we do anything to combat this?

It's gettin' baaaad...

I guess Jeepz made some sort of list :(

I can't imagine there would be any way to stop them.

Actually, there may be a way, I don't know if it would work or not. Some of the sites I've been on in the past have a waiting period before your account is validated and can post. They vary from 24-72 hours. These spammers are just auto-generated messages sent randomly, set up to create instant accounts when they roll onto a message board. A 24 hour waiting period may help, since they may not be set up to wait to post.

What do you think, Terry?

That is an excellent point Sparky!!
Some forum sites require a mod to activate the account. Maybe spammers could be filtere out that way.

Only drawback I can see with a mod activating the account, is how would they know it's a spammer.....except by the gawd-awful English!

The email account used to sign up with might provide a clue.

Another possible solution is making a certian number of posts required prior to a person being able to hyperlink, spammers wont waste the time accumulating 100 posts

I've made a few changes:

1. Upgraded to the latest version of our forum software (more for the hackers than the spammers).
2. I've turned on the "Verify Email address in Registration". Now if you sign up, you'll be emailed a link that you have to click on. If you don't, then your account won't be activated. This forces you to use a valid email account.

Hopefully this will help..

I think it may. The spammer will have to sign up with a valid email account, then click on a link that is emailed to them before they can start spamming. It's not hard to get around, but should at least cut down on it.

bounty - thanks man. I was surprised when I logged in today, to see all those deleted spam threads.

Guess they weren't getting anywhere in 'General' and have moved to 'How To'
