What's in the Transfer Case?

Just topped-off my transfer case while the rear wheels were jacked-up, think I over-filled 'case it's leaking now ... anyway, I used standard gear oil (stock '90 4.2 Manual Trans Wrangler) ... but I am just now reading that some Jeeps use ATF in the transfer case ... how's a newbie to know? And what's the damage with a half-quart of new gear oil, some of either which will leak out anyway through the rear seal?

Thanks,

Your Jeep uses ATF in the transfer case, I would clean all the gear oil out, to do so you'll have to open the t-case up or you will leave quite a bit of fluid in the bottom and in the tail housing. It will be a good time to replace that rear seal.

Next time just check the manual before adding fluids

Here's a writeup about installing an SYE so you can see what's involved in opening it up, takes about 2 hours to open, clean, and put back together for a shade tree mechanic with hand tools.
