what year engine is in my jeep yj

just purchused 87 wrangler with a 258 4.2 engine in it,but half of the jacks on the wire harness is not pluged in,and does not have them to plug in. It needs lifter work,so i need to identifiy what year and modle the engine is out of.It has the weirdest Id#on the block i have ever seen.The block#is 10 C01,,Between the 10 & C01 is a "o" which is on the upper half like a degree sighn. I would appriciate any help on how or where to identifiy this engine.

That's a day build code. I have lost the link to a site that breaks that down. I posted a list of pre 1987 casting numbers on your other post. See if you can find that casting number on your block. It may tell you more. Is the valve cover plastic or steel? The original 87 has a plastic valve cover. My 87 came with an 86 motor in it from the factory which also had the plastic cover. I think that pre 83 motors had a metal cover, but someone with more knowledge may correct me on that.

Someone may have just bypassed the computer (aka "Nutter bypass") to get the carb to idle/run better.

Thanks,i sent a reply and it got lost. I am having trouble with my internet connection. I have a weird engine #10 C01, between the 10 and C01 there is a "o" like degree sign. It has me stupified,and totaly stumped. I hope i am looking in the rite spot. It is by the #2 cylinder by the distributer.Again thanks for the info.
