What to do?

I want to put a wide trac on my 78 CJ5, I drive about 75% on road and 25% off. I want to change the axles on my jeep and have an opportunity to buy a set of axles off of a 86 CJ7, they are stock though. I am wondering if I should do that and go ahead and change the gears and put a locker, so that I can run 33's or 35's, or if it would be smarter to find a used dana 44. Cash is limited, as most college student's can tell you. Anyone have advise? (My engine is the 258)[addsig]

if you can get a 44, go that way... if not... you can do some upgrades to the 35[addsig]

He's probably got the AMC20, not the D35. Look at SJ's like the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, they can be found with the D44's front and rear. They can also be found with D44 front/AMC20HD rear which has stronger axle tubes than your 20 and 1 piece axle shafts.

You can also use the widetrack CJ axles, either way you'll probably have to build outriggers on the frame to hang the springs from.[addsig]

if your lookin at 86 axles there is a chance it could have a 44 rear, and you dont keen new mounts for the springs, they are a bolt-on[addsig]
