I own a 87' YJ with a 258 5 spd,it has 123,000 miles on it .Its pretty much stock except for a Jacobs ignition stuff and air stocks that don't air up.Just put a new super top on this weekend.I just to be able to drive it off road (here in Ohio its pretty flat) and have good traction and still be road worthy. What about a locker for rear end?Looking at all the info on mods on line is over whelming and$$$$$$$.Would a 2" lift help out?Tire ideas?Does anybody sell black steel rims with out the blue and red strip on them?Any and all suggestions would be appericated.Thank-you.OSU#1

first of all you need altitude and grip....

in other words get some off-road tyres and lift your jeep,you can use 2 types;

-bodylift,cheap and not so bad will driving on roads,

-supensionlift,better while off-road but gives less handling while on-road,also the more

expensive way to go....

after this everybody goes his or her own way..winches,lockers,airsnorkels,on-board welders, everything is possible...

what do you you think guys?agree or are there better idea's?

Not that I've found, I caved and bought the American Racing rims (with the stripes). Although I've

found a suitable application of mud usually solves the problem

. Later, I might strip them and try

POR-15 with the top coat (UV protection). Good excuse to rent a sand blaster from Homeless Depot.

Sounds like darkwolf said it all. If you want a locker i would go with ARB. Thay kick ass! You don't want a full time locker in the front axel if your going be driving on the street. It will rib stuff up in time. I have seen black rims without the strips my buddy has some i think he got the from amercian tire Co. This shop is a local tire place in town.Salinas,CA. As for a lift you can't go wrong with a 4'' lift and some nice BFG MTs.Good luck. [addsig]

Dude you have my Jeep! Sounds like we are in the same boat and here is what I plan to do ASAP. Same year, motor, ect..... Mine is dark Green with an after market hard targa top. I can get my springs rearched and add a long leaf here localy at a commercial spring shop parts and labor for 50.00 bucks a wheel this will give me a 1.5" to 2" lift over stock. I think I will add an inch via good heavy duty shackles. One inch body lift a bit later as my body mount pads are kinda squashed from years of use. Remove my track bars (this is pending on the feed back from the board). Longer break lines if I need them and new longer shocks as needed.

My other choice is to just get a 2.5 Rubicon Express lift and go that route. I feel a 31" or 32" tire is about my limit in a good mud tread. I am to old and fat to climb much higher! hehehehe Tug

If I am not seeing something here please let me know guys I am learning as I go! [addsig]

It all depends on one word- MONEY

Well actually depends on another thing too, what does your Jeep do now? Daily driver or weekend cruiser? (Every Jeep should be driven daily though..

If you want a lot of lift for cheap, go SOA. About 5.5" using most of your stock parts.

-Mud tires are nice, but they wear down quicker and are usually noisy on the road.

-Body lift gives clearance for tires, but doesn't really help too much off road, but doesn't hurt the handling on the road

-Suspension gives clearance for tires and additional clearance under the Jeep for off-roading, but usually sacrifices some handling for it.

-Lockers are nice, but can be harder on the parts. If you just want a little addition traction, a limited slip or posi traction can give you the added traction without the stress that a locker can give sometimes.

-Once again, it all depends on what you want your Jeep to do and what you want it to look like. Its all up to you. Anything you decide though, feel free to post any and all questions. They are usually answered in less than a day

An SOA that costs over 2k? I hope not... Im doing one this saturday. The guys here told me all it takes is 100 bucks and access to a welder and some metal... which I have! Of course I am going to use the same springs, if you buy new there's some of that 2k... but new springs can't cost more than 250 a piece, can they? Well it's your concern now. I too have a stock jeep and this is going to be the first major mod to it. Of course then come the new wheels and tires, light bar, and I HAVE to get rid of those DAMN BUMPERETTES! I cant stand them, along with the stock horn which I am changing to an air horn asap... The money you are going to spend on a winch you could get alot of other stuff! Yeah they are cool and I would love to have one, but thats toward the end of my list... good luck bud! ~Joop

you could always go for some custom vinyl! http://groups.msn.com/SickAutos
