What is backspacing

i hear this talk about backspacing and such and i have no idea what it is? could some one let me in on the secret?[addsig]

In a nutshell (I think I qualify) the distance from the back of the rim (bead) to the inside if the mounting plate (bolt holes).[addsig]

If you have to much backspacing you can get tires rubbing on things that they shouldn't.

I'm running 3 1/2 inch backspacing on 15X8 inch wheels, and 31X10.50 tires and don't have any rub. Hope this helps Evan[addsig]
