i trying to figure out what axles i have in my jeep. any help would be appreciated. i don't know where to look. thanks :?

most likly you have a dana 30 up front and a dana 35c or non-clip in the back. if it is the sport modle it might have a dana 44 out back

Stock axles in the '99 XJ are a Dana30 in the front and a Dana35 in the rear. The rear axle is a Chrysler 8.25" if you have the tow package.

The D44 was not available in '99, last year for it was like '89. The D35 and the 8.25" both use c-clips. Only older D35's are non c-clip, like '90 and older.

Yep,

My '88 cherokee's Dana 35c is the NON C-clip style.

cool i didnt know that xj's used an 8.25 chrylser..sucks that they are still c-clip axles tho..

guess it would'nt be a dana 35c than ehh.... :D :D

Nothing really wrong with the 8.25", and it's c-clips are not the weak link. To break a c-clip in an 8.25", you would need an enormous side load on the tire which you'd probably never experience.

Actually, It is a Dana 35c axle. The axle shafts have no C-Clips in the differentials though. See Bounty's post above: "Only older D35's are non c-clip, like '90 and older."

Though I Do wish I had a Dana 44 :(

<EDIT> Well, I must have been typing when you all were posting  <EDIT>

i have been under the impression that c-clips do weaken the axle, more specifically the side gears in the differential. the side gears are machined out to fit a c-clip thus removeing more material from them causeing them to be weaker. i didnt mean the axle shafts itself were weak but the axle overall is weaker due to c-clips.

any other opinions on this subject! just wondering what everyone else thinks! and what does the c stand for?

Okay, I did some quick research and here is it:

DANA 35
This axle, with a 7.56-inch ring gear, is the frontend for 4.0-liter Ford Rangers and Explorers/Mazda Navajos. The 35C version is found in the rear of Cherokees and Comanches. from http://www.g-body.org/tnt/diffs/diff-housings.php

So, I guess the "c" in 35c signifies that the axle is the rear (not front) version of the Dana 35 axle ?

But Wait there's more...

The Dana 35 has a 7 9/16" ring and pinion and uses one piece axles (2.625" in diameter). Starting in 1990 they switched to an inferior C-clip Dana 35c. The "c" in Dana 35c does not stand for C-clip, it stands for custom. They are custom because they are shipped incomplete from the Dana factory to Chysler and Chrysler completes the build. The two versions have different shafts, bearings, and carrier. There is a C-clip elminator kit available for the Dana 35c. From http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/axle/d35c.html

So my guess above was wrong. But now we know the real answer. Hope that's not TMI (too much info!)

The 'custom' explanation is what I had heard before, thanks for finding that.

There is not much material removed from the side gears for the c-clips, I don't think there is a strength issue with those. If you trash your spider gears, it's probably not due to the slight lack of material in that area.

All the busted D35's I've seen have snapped an axle shaft where it first necks down, before the splines and long before the c-clip area of the shaft. During twisting force, this is the weakest area, where it necks down.

Last week I called Chyrsler and they told me over the phone what axles I had in My 2000 xj. The # in Canada is 1-800-465-2001. Have your vin # ready. I am told that if you send in a written request that they might send you a copy of the vehicle specs. I am not sure what else it would include, but would be nice if you plan to hang on to it for a while.
