Welding

From all you welders out there what would you suggest as a good welding unit to start with? My dad was a great welder and I learned a little from him but I was thinking about taking a class at the local tech school. I would perfer a 110 unit if it will generate enough heat to weld up to a 1/4" steel.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

A good 110 unit is the Weldpack series by Lincoln Electric. Its a Wire feed flux core welder. and later on you can get the adapter kit if it doesn't already have one for the MIG setup. It's a sweet setup. I've been using my Lincoln for at least 11yrs.now.. Miller is also a good choice. if you decide to go that route, let me know.

To keep your costs down and give you enough power for up to 1/4 (.250) thick welding capabilites I would suggest Millers 115v passport line ,This unit can be ran at either 115v or 230V. It can use use eith flux coated wire (no gas needed) or a argon gas and plain wire feed. Now if you have or can get 230v I would suggest Millers 118 with autoset. This unit is a real good one to start learning on to welding. with the auto-set feature you dont need to know how to set your wire speed to power settings (amps).
Both of these units are MIG (wire fed) and very good units to learn on.

They make smaller 115V units with autoset but you did say you needed to weld up to 1/4 material.

I was thinking I would like to make my own bumper to save cost...but it looks like a good welder cost almost as much as a bumper! :p With that said the welder will keep letting me build other stuff. Makes me wish I had kept my dad's arc welder.

Thanks guys.

Here's how i justified buying a welder. I like a lot of the designs for bumpers , rock sliders etc. out there, but there is always something missing or something i would have done different. I've always wanted to have something different that nobody else can get anywhere else. I'm very critical when it comes to durability and dependability. After a while of building and designing whatever my customer ask for, it didn't take long to offset the cost of the welder. eventually, i bought the Mig outfit for my welder from the profits i saved up from the side jobs that i enjoyed doing and gained new friends as well. lastly, if i break something on my Jeep that's made of steel, It's game on! i can fix it.:) Was that convincing?

Yes! Now all I have to do is come up with the funds...
