water pump question

does anyone know if a bad water pump could cause a loss of power, or make nmy jeep run rough? seems like it kinda starts "chugging" when the water is at the proper level and the thermostat opens up. i know that i have a bad water pump because it has all of the "symptoms". but i am just curious if that would cause the power loss and rough idle also?

thanks in advance

I don't know about the rough idle unless the bearings in the pump are trying to seize up and the belt is not slipping causing everything else to slow.
You need to replace that thing ASAP. Running the engine without the water pump operating will eventually cause engine overheating and damage. The pump may not immediately seize, but when it does it will either throw the belt or burn it up. Either way won't be good.

New soft top

it has been sitting for about a month, i thought the head was cracked at first because of the loss in power and it seemed like there was water getting into the cylinders. i have ran it once without the thermostat and it ran fine. does that mean that it is just a water pump issue? i can tell that the bearings are shot due to the water pump whining when the jeep is on. i was also getting foam in the radiator when i ran it with no thermostat. :?: ....its only about 40 bucks to replace the thermostat and water pump so i guess i will give it a shot

Pull the oil dipstick and see if the oil is milky white. If so you have got water in your oil. Water will get in there though a cracked head or bad gasket.

no milky white crap....maybe i just need a water pump :D .....woohoo. the foam in the radiator worries me though.

Ever seen this?

The foam may be caused by cavitation in the water pump. Change the pump and the antifreeze and it will more than likely go away.

I was this l l close to changing my water pump and it turned out the whining was just a pulley. Take the belt off and give everything a spin to see what is making noise. If it is a pulley, you might just be seeing the foam from a dirty system and will need to flush&fill it. It still may be your water pump, but I would check everything else first. I would have been really PO'd if I'd have changed mine for nothing.

What year/motor do you have? I have a water pump sitting here doing nothing!

well there is coolant leaking out of the pump, so im almost positive that thats the problem. a water pump will only cost me about 40 bucks so no biggie if that is not it.

does anyone know if the water pump for the 4.2 is the same as the 4.0 because the head or head gasket very well may be cracked from overheating and if it is i might as well put a 4.0 head in there while i have the head off.

and i have a 1990 with the 258.....how much do you want for the pump?
