Want advice on mufflers

Ok, I have a 304 with fenderwell headers on my Jeep. I put some cheap summit glasspacks and have pipes exiting in front of the rear tires now. Problem is, it sounds so loud that I feel guilty driving down my street at night. I want some advice for replacing the glasspacks, keeping the headers.

a. I would prefer the inlet and outlet to be on the same side if it is a muffler.
I don't want the inlet in the middle as that would make the muffler stick
out past the side of the Jeep.
b. I don't want it to sound like my dad's hyundai, but I want to be able to
hear myself think. Some noise is good.

c. I don't want to spend a bunch of money (the glass packs were 18.99
each). For this same reaon, I want to keep the current configuration
(dumping in front of the rear tires.

What do you guys suggest?

I'd say don't feel guilty or don't drive at night! Do you think all the guys riding Harleys feel guilty... NOT! Heck they build'em noisy.

I have a similar setup on my 76 CJ7, but it's a toy so I don't worry too much. My neighbors sure know when I'm driving the CJ though. I drive a TJ on a regular basis.

If you really need to change the mufflers, many of the large after market manufacturers make universal mufflers. You should be able to purchase one with your required dimensions.

if this is a trail vehicle, go cheap. I put out the $$ for a full stainless borla system about 7 years ago and the muffler is absolutely destroyed. No rust though!

If this is a street vehicle, I have a magna-flow cat back on my tow rig and it sounds awesome, not too noticeable when driving normally, but when you get into it a little...sounds nice.

Old truck had a single flowmaster super 40 sounded nice, but the drone sound when on the highway gets a little annoying on long trips.

magnaflow 4x9 straight thru mufflers.

i have them on my 450hp Z28, with dual 3" exhaust.

throaty, but not deffening. price isn't bad either...i think around $60 each, and available in all kinds of in/out configurations
