Can anyone shed some light on this,I have a 68 CJ 5 and need help decoding the vin #. However the tag under the hood says it conforms to the applicable safety standards established under the national traffic and motor vechicle safety act of 1966. So is this a 66 or 68 CJ5,here is the vin # 8305017 351965. Thanks Nick

Well…..I have used various resources in the effort of finding out more about your vehicle. Unfortunately, AMC/Jeep did not start using detail record keeping until 1971 and later in the 80’s they became complainant the National VIN program.
But what I can tell you based on the serial number you provided is:
83= CJ5
05= Open Body
0= Universal
1= Left hand drive
7= 225 V6 w/emission control.
351965= serial number, no additional information available.
Not much help, but it's a start.
You may want to see if you can find the serial number on the engine block, if it is the original GM 225, you should be able to narrow down the year......
