Truth or myth?

One of my friends just told me - and I haven't looked anywhere to confirm it - that my JK doesn't have a roll bar, it has a sports bar which isn't intended for safety. I know I've heard that the doors were meant for comfort and not safety, but what about what's over my head? Is he unknowledgeable or am I?

In the new jks there is a sticker stating that the doors and roof will not offer any protection in case of accident. If the roll bar didn't do it's intended job they would have told us I think.

Veh manufacturers have to meet certain standards in rollover protection etc. There is a structure that is able to support the wieght of the veh in a way thst keeps the occupants safe as possible. While you don't wanna test it out. Search crash ratings on your veh. Or even you tube jeep rollover. You can see how it holds up. But like I said I'm not an engineer I'm a technician. So I re engineer the veh lol.

You can also remove the padding and see the roll cage and have a look.

Isn't the sports bar the plastic piece attached to the roll bar that contains the speakers and dome lights?

not sure on the new ones. on the older cj and yj, the sports bar is the smaller sporty looking roll bar while the family bar is the full one that also protects the back seat occupants.

I've got a friend with a tubing bender. He don't know it yet, but this winter we're gonna build an awesome cage that Parnelli Jones would be proud of.

Roll bar and sports bar are similar terms, sports bar is use in lue of roll bar for legal reasons. They (factory and aftermarket) do not use roll bar any more because if someone was to get injured in a roll over and the roll bar failed, it would be a huge lawsuit since the roll bar failed and it was intended for rolling over, confusing, but true.

but this arguement is kind of silly, how about this one..

Truth or myth, all red headed women are crazy, discuss.

What you have in most Jeeps, YJ, TJ, and JK is a sport bar, not a roll bar, the bar that drops verticaly next to the seat is the only bar that comes near the frame, and that only by proximity of a body mount, the rear bar bolts to the tub above the tail lights, and even worse, the front bars bolt to the windshield frame. In a rollover accident, the one bar next to the seat will offer some protection so long as you roll directly to the side and dont still have forward momentum to make that one bar fold, the rear bar will also afford a modicum of protection in a minimal way but again, only as long as the main bar doesnt fold, the windshield bars will protect you just as much as the winshield frame, that is that bars only support.

There are some very good aftermarket "sport cages", most are prohibitively expensive, you can buy sport cages that attach to the pillar system at the dash board, this is better than the windshield, but only just, you can also buy aftermarket frame tie-ins for your existing cage.

This feels like a safety issue, what you have to remember is that Dept of Trans has standards for roll over safety, its mostly based on a per vehicle basis on weight, so bigger tires, bumpers, sliders, all this adds weight Jeep didnt engineer for, luckily it isnt necessarily that much weight, and you can bolster your cage with some relatively affordable additions. Hardrock 4x4 makes a nice cage for about $600, I got mine on amazon for $290 Amazon.com: Performance Accessories 82200BB Bicycle Black Finish Sport Cage: Automotive (two of the pics on amazon are of my Jeep, topless so you can see it very well).

Sport and roll cages are like the old saying about driving and safety, 50mph is safer than 75 mph, but 30 mph is safer than 50mph, but the only way to be really safe is dont get in the car, same with cages, mine is a little safer than stock, not as safe as a full custom, but the only way to be safe is dont flop your Jeep :) hope some of this helps.

Undeniably true... Some of us to a greater degree than others;-)

Don't feel alone,
before my husband & I were married my dad told him to "RUN" before it's too late.... My husband thought he was kidding..... To this day (23+ years later) my dad still reminds him that he tried to warn him...
