transmission whinning/wont go into gear??

i got to force the shifter to get the jeep into gear it is really hard and the transmission is making a really loud whinning sound. sometimes she wont go in reverse but if i stop her and then put her into reverse then she will work fine.. to me it sounds like my throw out bearing but i am not sure. when it is whinning when i am driving if i put in the clutch the whinning stops. fluid level is good in the transmission and transfer case. did any one have this problem before? would a sensor have any thing to do with this?

I would guess throw-out bearing also. When you put pressure on it, it goes away. BUT, troulble going into gear also sounds like syncronizers to me. Could also explain the whinning noise. Does it "grind" between gears a little? From my experiance when throw-out bearings go, they go quick. It's more than a little "whinning". BTW, have you messed around with the shifter linkage any??

no grinding in between gears but it just wont go no mater how hard i force it.. i put a 3 inch body kit in my jeep a few days ago and i had my shifter linkage off but the problem was before i even installed the kit.. if i am gonna do a overhaul on my tranmission i kinda think it would probabally be cheaper to buy a new one rather than fool around trying to overhaul because i read somewhere that it is only a cheap transmission..

I wouldn't quite jump into rebuilding or replacing the transmissision just yet. As Brad mentioned, the whinning noise could be from the throwout bearing. Which makes sense since it goes away when you step on the clutch. It's possible that the failure of the bearing is causing the pressure plate not to disengage all the way to allow the syncronizers to find its engagement of the gears you are selecting. Another possible culprit in this case is the input shaft bearing. Check the trans. fluid and see if there is an exessive amount of metal mixed in the fluid. Big chunks normally would indicate that there is a component that is wearing abnormally within the transmission gear assembly such as the bearing.

i am gonna change my oil today and see if there is any metel in it and i am gonna relplace it with redline mt-90. i am runing syncromesh now from quaker stake because there is no redline dealer where i live and i got to order it online. but now i have some. i am a 4 hour drive away from my home i am changing it in the parking lot somehwere haha i hope she will get me back home

I have pretty much the same issue except mine sounds different. It sounds like running water, through a wall. It too goes away when the clutch is in but I dont have a problem getting in gear.

When was the last time u changed ur transfer case fluid? that may b the chain running over the gears u hear.

Sorry to hijack
I just got it about a month ago and it had been sitting for 2 years. So.... never LoL How do I do it? I believe I have a Dana 300.

i changed my transmission oil yesterday and i found a little bit of black stuff on the drain plug. it was nto alot so i think everything inside the transmission is ok. i replaced the oil with mt-90 and the whinning is almost gone. i ordered a clutch kit and throwout bearing yesterday i will change that next week when i get back from my trip down south. correct me if i am wrong but this is a dry clutch right? i dont need to drain my transmission to change the clutch and throw out bearing right??
