Hi people, first time attempting this on a computer so please bear with me. I have an 88 YJ with an exploded Pugeot transmission. I have located a transmission from a 96 Cherokee and need to know if it will fit my YJ. The 96 has a 4.0 L and my YJ has a 4.2L. Both transmissions are 5 speed manuals. Is this a viable swap? Will I need to purchase a bunch of adaptors or anything? I am hoping for as close to a bolt-in swap as I can find. Can someone help me?

The Cherokee transmission clocks the transfer case lower than on the YJ, so to use it in the YJ you would need to redrill the holes at the back of the transmission to clock the transfer case up and keep it from contacting the skidplate.
There is a difference in spline count on the transmission output shaft between those two trannies, so you'll either need the transfer case with the Cherokee transmission or swap the correct input shaft into your transfer case.
There is likely a difference in clutches, as well as flywheels and pilot bearings, unsure on those two.

The Wrangler disk and pressure plate are the same part number from 87 to 99. I have an 89 AX15 in my 87. I used the same flywheel as I was told to match the flywheel to the motor. That may need some research to make sure. It will also require that you get a pilot bushing machined or special ordered because the input shaft is larger on the 96 than it is on the 88. You'll also need the master/slave unit, clutch fork, and throwout bearing.

From the research I've done the AX15 transmission, mid '89+, uses a different clutch than the '87-'89 Peugeot BA10/5. As for the AX15 transmission, it uses 3 different clutch setups over the years. '89-'92, '93, and '94+.
