transmission issues/questions

I have a 98 grand Cherokee 5.2l. It has a 44re trans with 260k miles. It has never given me issues until now. When it is shifting from first to second it is very slow in between. When shifting from second to third it seems like it slips out of gear and revs a little before it goes into third.
Now I understand its high time things like this start to go at 260k. First question is to rebuild or replace? Second is on a replacement. I found one at a local yard that has only 36000 miles for $500. Only drawback is its been there since 1999. Its been indoors but I don't know if its been covered. I have bought lots of excellent parts there in the past and fully trust them but its been there for 12 years. Does anyone know if a transmission that's been sitting that long would be any good?
Thanks!

Personally I always buy rebuilds with a good warranty. Pay a little more but the 42 will often take advantage of the warranty. My buddy's has lifetime transmissions lol they go right before the warranty is up. Lol. I usually never pay more than 250 for a used trans. As to me it's just a core and I will go through them with high energy clutches and a seal kit. I have rebuilt alot of trans but I like the warranty.

I hear you on the rebuilds but seeing that this one only has 36k on it I can't see why not. I'm sure I can haggle it down a little plus they do things on a barter for repeat customers and I have some things laying around that wont sell to knock it down even more. I think I could get it down to $350 or so. I'm just worried about how long it has been sitting and if that will effect its condition.

Just to clarify its an automatic which is generally more expensive and that is compounded when rebuilds are concerned.

Yup. As long as it had fluid in it the clutches and seals should be fine. The only thing I would do is pull the pan off and check for moisture cuz the valve body does not like moisture. A manual often costs more to overhaul than an auto does. A 150 clutch kit and a 30 dollar seal kit it's done. Rest is labour and possible hard parts. Drums. Pump. Gearsets etc
